Good news for e-books: Notebook sales whiz past desktop sales—and now you can buy an Acer netbook for $299

Notebook sales have whizzed past desktop sales, and that’s good news for e-books, considering that notebooks are better suited for lazing back and reading on the couch.
The best form factor would be a tablet. But maybe we’ll see some more notebooks that can also serve as tablets.
Perhaps reinforcing the notebook trend, Acer and BestBuy have at least temporarily dropped the price of the Aspire One notebook to $299 from $350. Other brands to escalate the price war?
Alas, the Aspire One is not tablet-convertible.
Detail: Yes, if you have a recliner and the right monitor, a desktop can work out fine for e-reading in some cases.

I found my tablet PC wasn’t particularly convenient to read e-books from. It was a bit heavy and clumsy (and the battery life was too short). Hopefully laptops will get much lighter but for now I think e-ink devices are quite superior for e-book reading.
Depends on the machine, Robbie–and your battery needs vs. the actual battery life.
I was happy with my OLPC machine when I used it as an e-book tablet, except for the lack of ability to read DRM-tainted books from large publishers. A faster “on” time would have helped, too.
Thanks,
