From Plato to Charles Dickens and  F. Soctt Fitzgerald, the OpenCulture site lists free books. Just keep in mind that you can download Kindle-readable books from Feedbooks, Manybooks and Project Gutenberg and elsewhere, not merely the Kindle Store.

Also, why no mention of the Sony Reader and Nook and the ePub format usable on both?

That said, this is a useful list.

TeleRead itself has a list of free book sites and guides to finding freebies, and we’d welcome volunteers to update and expand it.
