simonschusterfounders An executive from CBS’s College Sports Network will be chief digital officer at Simon & Schuster, as reported by Publishers Weekly. Elinor Hirchhorn is the first to hold the S&S title.

S&S says she’ll “develop new businesses, partnerships and publishing paradigms” and that the goals will include “cross marketing platforms that the entire company can avail itself of.” So maybe it’s not so coincidental that she comes from a CBS area far removed from publishing. In plain English, does that mean that someday sports videos could carry plugs for S&S books or that multimedia books could point reader-viewers to old sports or news archives?

This-here multimedia and cross-platform stuff can get complicated, much more so than the tech in use when S&S was founded—all the more reason to think about simplification through .epub and other standards, as well as use of social DRM rather than the usual kind. If there can be more coordination between the P and E sides of S&S and similar publishers, not just within the high-tech parts, so much the better! Good luck, Elinor.
