Cheap books vs. lit and diverse political views—plus Wikipedia’s denial of volunteer crisis

–Cheaper Books Come at a High Cost to Worthy Literature, in the New York Times. Not only does the Times article discuss pricing issues, but also Wal-Mart’s favoritism toward politically conservative writers such as Glenn Beck. E-books, of course, as I see it, could be one way to bypass the Wal-Marts. In a related vein, see my post headlined Arguing with Idiots: If book chains want to save paper books from the Kindle, why are they so stupid about local needs? 

–Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales Denies Site is ‘Losing’ Thousands of Volunteer Editors, in the Telegraph. Several years ago, Gary himself raised concerns about editors leaving. “The bottom line for us about Wikipedia will not be coming today, tomorrow, or even next year, but in 4 or 5 years. Will volunteers stay with it?” Wales’s side is that the number of editor has stabilized and that “You can’t keep growing forever, there are only so many people on the internet.” According to Wales, “Wikipedia is doing just fine.”
