image image So why hasn’t Amazon revealed Kindle sales numbers? All it does is tease us with ballyhoo about the K machine being the “most wished for, most gifted and number one best-selling product”—“record-breaking,” of course.

Well, a knowledgeable source close to TeleRead, notably Co-Editor Paul Biba, a retired corporate lawyer, tells the Guardian:

“Amazon has always been a secretive company. Companies like Amazon think that giving out information will help competitors…

“The Nook has sold out, much to the embarrassment of Barnes & Noble. If Amazon had released its sales figures then maybe Barnes & Noble could have used these to plan better when ordering its first shipment of Nooks. Always keep the competition guessing.”

In a related article, the Guardian quotes Paul on the question of whether he’s seen Kindles in the wild: “Yes, not ‘lots’ but more than I expected. I have seen them at airports and at shopping malls. At the malls they seem to be used by men who seem to be waiting while their wives are shopping.”

Paul spends hours and hours cranking out TeleRead posts, and I’m thrilled to see his favorite newspaper—that’s what the Guardian is—noticing him.
