Paperback Digital out of biz? Another DRM screwing for consumers?

Paperback Digital has posted this sign saying it’s closed. So what happens to the people who bought DRMed books there? Will Mobi come to their rescue, for example? Check out a new thread in MobileRead.
Of course, with DRMed books and no central consumer-oriented repository of the kind I’ve proposed, nothing is safe. Amazon walked away from the Adobe format, for example, stranding people who were dependent on book lockers and didn’t see the warning until it was too late. The Kindle had better take off, or Jeff Bezos could back off from that.
Businesses are, surprise, in business; and most don’t care squat about the safety of your personal library. No anti-biz sentiment here. That’s just the truth. As the savvy keep noting, you don’t buy a DRMed book—you just lease it.

I still do not understand why people are continually surprised that when a drm shop goes down or uninterested in supporting a format, they lose the ability to read the corresponding e-books unless they were converted.
Hopefully now that this issue is getting front-page attention in music and movies, people will clamor for consumer protection rules.
