‘Linux-based handheld has DRM?!’

Details via Mike Cane and Boing Boing. Also see MobileRead item about the new GP2X. The vendor talks up the machine for e-books. So is the DRM associated with an e-book reading system? And which e-book formats are in use? Meanwhile, POed by the built-in DRM, Nokia 770 booster Mike Cane says: “Bring on the 770, baby! Accept no hussies.” The GP2X’s screen, by the way, lacks the size and resolution of the 770′s.

The GP2X screen is 320 x 240, versus the Nokia 770′s 800 x 480, which is FIVE times as many pixels.
Whoo, Roger, yours is bigger! >:)
David: “The vendor talks up the machine for e-books. So is the DRM associated with an e-book reading system?”
The developer writes:
“It’s open. You want to develop your own games for the GP2X? Go right ahead. The SDK is included with the system free. Not since the days of the Amiga has a system been so easy to develop for, commercially and for fun.”
“The GP2X’s screen, by the way, lacks the size and resolution of the 770’s.”
Yes … but it is a good deal cheaper (£125 – say about $225? – versus predicted $350). Now if they had only included wifi I would have been seriously tempted, even with a lowish resolution screen…
I own a GP2X so if you have any specific questions, just ask. It comes with a text file reader built in and someone has written a PDF reader (which is a bit slow). It is truly an open platform so any ebook app that can be written/run on linux can run on it.

Great info, Brian. More details welcome about the e-book aspects. Also, how do you find the screen? Thanks. David
