John Scalzi signs 10-year, $3.4-million book deal with Tor (Los Angeles Times)
The multimillion-dollar deal will last a decade. During that time, Scalzi will write 13 novels for Tor. They’re partially mapped out: 10 novels for adults, plus three young adult novels; a sequel to "Lock In," his most recent book; a return to the "Old Man’s War" universe; and an entirely new series set in the far future..
The TeleRead take: So happy to see merit rewarded. I still have the free e-book version of Scalzi’s first novel, Agent to the Stars, which he uploaded to Project Gutenberg. It’s no longer there. But even now, you can try out a free online version here.

Small-town libraries struggle to stay open when funding is short (Arkansas Online)
In Prairie County, voters turned down in a 2-mill increase in the November general election that would have funded the DeValls Bluff Public Library. The library closed soon after the defeat, and patrons had to travel 9 miles to the Des Arc Public Library.
Officials are placing a new millage issue on a special election ballot for July 14.

Report Surveys Opportunities for English-Language Writers in China (Publishing Perspectives)
According to a survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, the average Chinese adult reads 4.77 books in 2013, about 0.38 books more than the equivalent figure in 2012. Reading times for an adult on a mobile phone averaged 21.7 minutes a day in 2013, 5.18 minutes longer than in 2012.24.

The Poetry of Raymond Carver Makes a Leap to E-Books (New York Times)
…this week…10 of Mr. Carver’s books will be published digitally for the first time. Vintage Books is publishing e-book editions of the author’s entire backlist, including six collections of short stories and four volumes of poetry, for $9.99 to $11.99.
