Kindle 2 price = at least 110% of Kindle 1′s?

Those who had been hoping for a price drop with the second version of the Kindle may be in for a disappointment.
Found via the MobileRead forum, Kindle guide author Stephen Windwalker reports based on inside knowledge that Amazon will soon start contacting customers who have the original Kindle back-ordered, offering them a chance to upgrade their order to the Kindle 2 for about a 10% increase in price.
It seems unlikely that they would make that offer to existing customers but ask new customers to pay less; if anything, those who had not back-ordered would probably pay even more. So it appears the price for the Kindle 2 will be back at the $400 mark again. No word on what this will mean for Kindle 1 prices, or indeed if they even will continue to manufacture the Kindle 1 with the 2 on the way.

It still a little expensive, for giving it to my mother as a gift, apart of that, i could wait for the devices to get cheaper.
Lame. How does Amazon justify a price increase in a world where electronic devices always drop in price over time? The screen appears to be the same. The device itself is bigger if anything.
As a kindle 1 owner I’m going to be very unhappy if Amazon tries to justify a price increase by including improved software functionality. I think most of us early purchasers believed that we’d be receiving regular software upgrades that improved the clunky interface.
It’s starting to look as if Amazon’s main focus when it comes to ebooks is to gouge as much profit as possible out of the first couple of waves of customers. This might boost short term profits but it won’t build customer loyalty.
I cannot believe the capabilities of my Kindle. I keep about 10 books on the Kindle that I am constantly refering to and/or reading. For instance I have the Bible, cookbook, 3 novels, and some other reference materials on it at the present time. I sometimes look at the news and other information on the “web,” and find the selection of books available for download (many for free) to be mindboggling. I am a fan!
