On his blog, Henry Melton, whose Emperor Dad I have reviewed here (and whose other books I will review en masse as soon as I finish reading the review copies he granted me) engages in some plain talk about the pricing process on his self-published books and e-books.
It is interesting (and fairly rare) when an author is willing to discuss what he actually earns per book. Although he didn’t set out to make it that way, the amount Melton earns per book or e-book is generally about the same—$1.70 to $1.75—regardless of format, or more when people buy the books directly from him instead of an intermediary.
Melton’s books are available in paperback, Mobipocket, Kindle, and iPhone appbook format, as well as directly through his website. We have also written about Melton’s blog post on the challenges of e-book conversion.

Kudos to Henry for sharing with his customers! It’s all part of the need to rebuild the publishing process from the ground-up, to make room for the e-book market. As more successful authors outline their processes, more established and budding authors and publishers can follow their example (or build on it) to make the change happen.
