Read an E-Book Week debuts for 2010
January 22, 2010 | 4:09 pm

Read an E-Book Week is March 7-13 this year, and Rita's site is freshly cleaned and polished for 2010 (with a bit of my assistance).   I urge all TeleRead members to check the site out, to see a bit of the face Rita is putting out to the public.  The REBW site is a great one for those who are new to the e-book world, and are looking for basic but comprehensive information on e-books, the players involved, the benefits, and e-books' future. REBW is still getting support from the likes of E Ink and Sony, and new e-book producers and...

Hypertext Novels
March 25, 2009 | 11:44 am

images4The RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization that provides analysis and solutions for the challenges facing the public and private sectors around the world, has done an interesting study of e-books entitled: Innovation and the Future of e-Books. The author of the study was John W. Warren. According to Mr. Warren, the future of e-books may include enhanced e-books. This concept could prove interesting to authors interested in experimenting with hypertext novels. A hypertext novel would include links in the text that take a reader to various locations either within, or without, the novel itself. In 2002 when my...

How Read an E-Book Week improved my sales and popularity, and got me a new job!
February 22, 2009 | 5:00 pm

sjportrait1.jpgEditor's Note: Here is the first article by a new TeleRead contributor, author Steve Jordan. You can find his bio here. I met Steve at the TOC Conference and after I heard his story, over lunch, I badgered him into writing it up for us. Hopefully it will be the first contribution of many to come: I know, I know, the title sounds like a 1965-era deodorant commercial. But in point of fact, Rita Toews, the founder of Read an E-Book Week, has done a great service to everyone who hopes to see the market for e-books grow...

Text to speech: a problem
February 18, 2009 | 12:07 am

Picture 1.pngThe release of the Amazon Kindle 2 has caused a bit of consternation with respect to the text to speech function. The Authors Guild immediately expressed dissatisfaction with the feature, claiming TTS is part of an author's audio rights. They demanded that Amazon disable the feature. Amazon claims TTS is part of the author's e-book rights and refuses. Marilyn Byerly, writer and book doctor for established authors and a NY Times bestseller states in her Adventures in Writing blog: "The major legal problem with TTS is that it has never been clearly defined through a lawsuit or some other legal means....
