The ‘$5 PC’: Will OLPC-related USB stick software include FBReader? And could e-book app devs use same idea?
June 24, 2009 | 9:52 am
“The open-source education software developed for the ‘$100 laptop’ can now be loaded onto a $5 USB stick to give aging PCs and Macs a new interface and custom educational software.” – David Talbot in Technology Review. The TeleRead take: I wonder if the USB-housed software in time will include a Sugarized version of FBReader? Or other good e-reading software? What’s more, could mainstream commercial e-reader developers use the same USB concept to ease installation? Remember, a Net-connected PC can download and display books---potentially, with Kindle-style ease. Hello, Adobe?...

May 22, 2009 | 3:48 pm
I guess this is hardware day given the leaning of most of the posts. To round them off check out Wired, which has a round up of all the rumors related to the 3rd generation iPhone. The Gadget Lab article is here. Take a look at Iliad Thoughts and Applications to see the state of the author's FBReader port....

Local library search has been also added. Image scaling has been also implemented in this version. Mobipocket support and network book search are expected in the next (stable) version....
Great deal on a Nokia Internet Tablet – makes a good ebook reader
April 20, 2009 | 12:30 pm
TigerDirect is selling the Nokia 810 internet tablet (the one with the keyboard) for only $224.99. This is a great price and the 810 makes an excellent ebook machine, as FBReader runs perfectly on it.
I have the two earlier Nokia tablets and they work wonderfully. Their WIFI connectivity is easy to use and is quite sensitive. I recommend the Tablets to anyone who is looking for a portable connectivity solution along with an ebook reader....

Adapted FBReader software could help One Laptop per Child in a major way
March 1, 2009 | 3:36 am
I begged. I pleaded. Please, OLPC, get serious about FBReader. I sold my OLPC laptop partly because FBReader was not adapted to Sugar for the laptop---as an alternative to the reading software that came with the machine. FBReader ran on the OLPC's XO-1 laptop, but it was a hassle to install and use. Perhaps just as importantly, it wasn't customized for schoolchildren in the early grades.
What a shame. With FBReader, for example, students could enjoy access to well-presented public domain books from sources such as Feedbooks. No longer would they be quite so reliant on PDF files. The industry-standard...
New FBReaderJ headed for Android Market ‘in near future’—and meanwhile version 0.3.0 is out
February 19, 2009 | 2:14 am
FBReaderJ 0.3.0 is out now for Android cellphones, and you can download it and see more screen shots here. The big changes, as described by developer Nikolay Pultsin, are the following: FBReaderJ digital signature has been changed. For the versions below 0.3.0, an auto-generated Google SDK debug key was used. We plan to publish FBReaderJ in the Android Market in the near future. Android Market does not accepts applications signed by the debug key. Unfortunately, this means that if the FBReaderJ of version < 0.3.0 is installed on your device, you must remove the...

$169 netbook; Calibre tutorial; News readers for the iPhone
January 18, 2009 | 10:55 am
This is a pretty bare bones machine, but for this price it may have its uses. It's a Linux machine, made by Belco, (variant not specified) with a BroadMIPS XBurst 400 MHz 32-bit CPU, 128 MB RAM, 1 GB NAND Flash storage, a 10/100 MB Ethernet interface and 802.11b wireless access. You're not going to be watching movies on this, but if it will run the Linux version of FBReader then you might have one of the cheapest e-book readers around. Geeks.com is selling it. Dear Author has part 2 of its tutorial on Using Calibre to...
