Bookeen high-speed e-ink video shows scrolling in action
October 25, 2011 | 10:50 am
Remember Bookeen? The company made a line of e-readers called Cybooks. Back in 2007, it was going to make an e-reader for Baen, but it never materialized. In the last few weeks, they’ve made a couple of announcements about an impending new e-ink technology called HSIS (High Speed Ink System) that will be fast enough to allow scrolling and panning around web pages. On GigaOm, Kevin C. Tofel presents a 10-second YouTube video of a demo of the e-ink technology, showing a screen scrolling around on a website. It looks pretty good; comparable to what it looks like to...
Bookeen and ePagine set up wireless bookstore in France
October 16, 2010 | 5:02 pm
This is a Google translation of the ActuaLitte article. The original French article is here. Blockquotes omitted:
Exclusive: The information is still unofficial, since the introduction of this service will only be on October 21 next, when Focus on the Digital organized by the NIS. It will speak digital, for sure, but in the meantime, several elements have filtered ...
Today, the functioning of the Amazon Kindle is simple: a camera linked to an ebookstore. Simple, but pretty damn restrictive, since between others, the ebook reader from Amazon will only play files in Amazon. EPub not so. However, this system...
Bookeen’s Cybook Orizon to launch in Europe next month
September 21, 2010 | 7:15 am
Bookeen’s blog has a piece on its new Cybook Orizon e-reader, which is due to launch in Europe in mid October, with pre-orders available starting September 25. The blog post is, predictably, written in PR-speak (“Bookeen, the European leader of the ebook reader market…”) but it does have a few interesting points. The Orizon features a 6” Sipix touchscreen and wifi connectivity, as well as an “unrestricted web browser that allows you access [sic] the website of your choice with no limits, and download content that’s readable on your device.” The device is quite thin, too, being only...
A first in France: publisher to sell an ebook reader
May 11, 2010 | 10:29 am
Received the following from Nicolas Gary of Actua Litté: just to point a news in France. A publisher In Libro Veritas has just joined Bookeen, to sell an Opus with his name. It's the eReader Inlibro veritas Opus. I think it's a big deal for the first time - in France for sure..
Here's a Google translation from the French site:
What is nice when readers also offers white label ebooks is that you can affix the logo you want. And for 99 cents less than the price announced by Bookeen on its website, the publisher In Libro Veritas - it...

E-Reader-Info interviews CEO of Bookeen
February 17, 2010 | 10:07 am
Michael Dahan, co-founder as well as CEO, of Bookeen gives a most interesting interview. Here are a couple of excerpts and for the full interview, including a discussion of Mobipocket and Epub, you can go here.
Q: The Gen3 and the Opus use E Ink, while the new Orizon will use Sipix's e-paper. Why did you change to this display technology?
For three major reasons:
1. AUO (Sipix) touchscreen is light year away from Sony resistive technology. You keep the optical quality of ePaper and you get an incredibly reactive touchscreen. For us touchscreen on such a large display...

Bookeen Cybook Gen 3 Review
February 9, 2010 | 7:10 am
Carly Z at Geardiary has a review of this unit with the latest firmware update.
All-in-all she thinks that the price is high for what you get and, while loving the hardware, can find no compelling reason to pay the asking price....
Bookeen’s new Orizon e-reader: WiFi, touch screen without stylus needed; Opus now in different colors
January 8, 2010 | 11:50 am
Bookeen’s new Orizon e-reader, unveiled at CES, features WiFi and Bluetooth and a six-inch screen without a stylus needed. Price might be $250. Among the formats is Adobe-DRMed ePub. The Orizon measures 12.25 x18.5x0.75 cm and weighs 226 g. Resolution is 167 dpi with 16 gray scales. And, yes, there is an accelerometer Hmm. I wonder how well the Bluetooth will work with a keyboard, and whether there might be some Web browsing capability tucked away in there. A Gmail machine in a pinch? One positive of Bookeen readers is that they come with an “embolden”...

Both versions of the upgrade can display the HTML and TXT formats. Plus, the second flavor includes the FictionBook 2 format. Go to this password-protected support area for the downloads. The readme PDF is here, without a PW needed. Via a memory card...
