The Book SalonSteph Little, author, publishing professional, and online and offline marketer, has launched a new website and resource center for Australia’s authors, The Book Salon, offering them guidance, pointers, resources, information, or just straightforward encouragement, according to Australia’s Books and Publishing.

Herself a Brit, Steph relocated to Australia and now works as a marketing campaign manager at local independent publisher Hardie Grant, but her new initiative is purely personal.

“I moved to Melbourne from the UK in 2010 in search of a better life. I found it,” she says.  “My favourite writers are Roald Dahl, Geoff Dyer, Kate Atkinson, Emily Brontë, Matt Haig, Ian McEwan, Richard Yates, Chris Cleave, Liz Jensen, and … seriously, how long do you have?”

I asked her a few questions about The Book Salon and the situation for authors in Australia.

TeleRead: What inspired you to start the site?

Steph Little: I’m passionate about books, writers, and the publishing industry (in all of its guises), and I saw a gap in the market for a site that offered both advice on being a writer and tips on publishing, marketing, PR and social media.

The Book SalonTR: Where does the site stand in terms of supporting self-publishing versus helping authors deal with traditional publishers?

Little: My background is in traditional publishing but I’m keen to cater for all writers and to cover all facets of our changing industry.

TR: What is the situation for new writers in Australia? Does this differ at all from other markets?

Little: In my experience the market for writers in Australia is no different to other markets. Although we are lucky to have with a host of opportunities for writers to be published—in journals, almanacs and magazines—and I plan to showcase those opportunities where I can.

TR: What resources are you planning to add to the site?

Little: Right now I have a free e-book, :50 Essential Resources Every Writer Needs.” I plan to publish a wide range of e-books and resources for writers—stay tuned.
