Dr. H’s Nokia N770 adventures: Huntsville ahead
August 15, 2007 | 3:48 pm

phone operatorsMy Nokia N770 handheld, a hit as an e-reader in my household, had suffered a White Screen of Death. Now it was time to call Nokia. I dreaded the red tape suffered by others who had bought their N770s from Woot. One customer had been offered just a refund, no repair, no fix. Nice surprise I was pleasantly surprised, however. In less than ten minutes, I was greeted politely by a really nice lady, even if she talked a little too fast and wanted my cellphone number, not just a home number. She gave me instructions and a repair...

Another Woot N770 bites the dust
August 14, 2007 | 10:18 am

Yesterday my husband's N770 somehow got turned off. He went to turn it on and there it was…the White Screen of Death. I tried turning it back off and it did eventually. When I turned it back on the WSOD was gone, but the screen colors and letters bled together. Reflashing the device the device didn't help. His screen is dying. And then, I figured, it would revert to me. Wrong! They fell in love with the N770. But some buyers haven't been as happy. A rash of White Screen of Death (WOSD) incidents happened among the Wooters, causing many potential shoppers to rethink N770 purchases from other retailers with low prices. Some of the sales in the $140 range may still be going on. If you buy,...

December 10, 2006 | 4:01 am

The Sony ReaderModerator's note: Dr. Ellen Hage's dissertation was e-book-related. She holds a Ph.D. from Capella University (2005) in Organizational Management with a specialization in Information Technology. I have owned my Sony Reader now for two months, and I still have mixed feelings. For some reason it has taken me awhile to warm up to it, but I do like it. Is it my favorite of all e-book devices? Certainly not and I will explain later. The pros Battery life is excellent. I have had to recharge only twice since it arrived. The display is not what I had...

If you own a Gemstar and want to buy new e-books…
January 25, 2006 | 4:40 am

REB1200Do you own a Gemstar GEB1150, GEB2150 or REB1200 e-book machine (photo)--all of them orphans, no longer on sale? Want to read best-sellers and other new e-books from eBookwise or Filament Books? Well, there's hope--even though Gemstar halted sales in July, 2003 with servers due to shut down on July 16 this year. According to eBook Technologies, owners of these three models can now migrate their devices to ETI firmware and purchase content from eBookwise and Filament Books online stores. Instructions for migration can be found here. Thanks to Tracy Connors, a member of...
