100 Amazon editor picks for $1.99-$3.99 thru’ 9/30/11 + Ask @Author while reading
September 1, 2011 | 9:42 am

100kbooks 2to4 100 KINDLE BOOKS FOR $1.99 to $3.99 The Kindle Post (readable close to the top right corner of the Kindle Store), has quite a bit of news lately. The editors have "hand-selected" a varied lot here, with most of the books being sold at $1.99 to $2.99 and some at $3.99, until September 30, 2011.  There are some really interesting books in this particular collection. The image I used may give an idea, as it includes some that Amazon editors have highlighted as "favorites" -- but click here to check them out. ...

Kindlescribe.com, Kindleair domain names. HP Touchpads #1 & 2 Amazon sellers
August 23, 2011 | 10:26 am

RUMOR CITY With HP's two terminated Touchpads suddenly taking over the top selling slots at Amazon from the Kindle and the iPod Touch, even at heftier prices than HP's discounted prices that were announced Saturday before selling out Sunday at those attractive prices ($99~ and $150~), Kindle and Amazon Android tablet rumors are hitting the news again. I tried getting the 32gig HP Sunday morning for $150 but they were sold out everywhere.  Why?  Real, dedicated Multitasking (unlike Apple's suspended type), the popular Beats Audio sound, Flash video (blank on the iPad), Hulu...

August 18, 2011 | 11:34 am

"Updates for Kindle for PC (v1.6.1) and for Mac (v1.6.2) now available The update for the Mac was announced two days ago, the PC update earlier.  They both add the Collections feature. UPDATE - Nate at The Digital Reader has been having problems with the Kindle for PC update and points to others reporting the same at MobileRead Forum the first days of August.  At that site, HarryT provides a link to HippoFiles' list of downloadable files for earlier versions for anyone having trouble with the latest v1.6.1 install.  [End of Update] If you've...

Kindle news roundup: reactions to Kindle Cloud Reader and price-fixing lawsuit
August 17, 2011 | 9:48 am

FIRST, two reports by Joel in the Comments area of the Kindle Cloud Reader announcement story, who has found that: 1. he can run "multiple" instances of the Cloud Reader (reading one book while another is open for reference) and 2. the Cloud Reader counts as one 'single' device.  He has the Kindle Cloud Reader app running on 3 PCs and one Linux box so far. I noted that my Kindle App for PC is shown on my ManageYourKindle as a total of 3 Kindle-compatible devices, one each for my desktop, a laptop and a netbook....

Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader beats Apple restrictions
August 10, 2011 | 9:41 am

That was Electricpig's headline last night, which was to the point. Kindle for Web to the RescueShould Cloud Reader be sporting a cape?  For now, it can fly only in Google Chrome browser and in Safari, but it's very slick, not faster than a speeding bullet but pretty smooth.  All my book covers showed up instantly and I could choose to download any to read offline instead of reading them online from the 'cloud.' If you're on Windows and don't have the Chrome browser yet (or if you're on a Mac and want to try Chrome), download it here and then browse...

PC Magazine’s Tim Bajarin relays coming-tablet talk from “multiple sources”
August 8, 2011 | 9:39 am

Not tremendously exciting but Tim Bajarin is passing along what he's hearing.  In essence:  . center of its design would be on reading books . sources say Amazon is using pretty low-cost parts and not using any  of the major manufacturers. . key goal: make the tablet "very inexpensive" "as much as 20 to 25 percent below cost" . use a new business model to 'own' the Android tablet market (not targeting Apple) . go for usual low-cost razor idea, with Android Appstore, streaming movie and music services as the blades . apply users' purchases to their tablet through a 2-yr...

Google Books’ iriver ereader – some early reports
July 13, 2011 | 9:55 am

EARLY ASSESSMENTSThe picture accompanying this was from an AOL Tech photo-set in an Engadget.com story in January, in which settings tended to be out of focus or differently lit for one or the other, but this photo shows the two e-readers at about equal size and perspective and you can see what is described in the review by Melissa J. Person for PCWorld yesterday.  I've selected the points that jumped out at me, but it's her usual longer, balanced review, and it'll be much better to read the full piece.Today PCWorld added the overall rating of 3 stars out of 5, with the...

Google gets an e-reader. What it can and can’t do
July 12, 2011 | 9:51 am

GOOGLE GETS AN E-READERThe iriver HD is the first e-reader to have the open Google eBooks platform integrated.  Target has exclusive rights to sell it for 6 months, at $139.00.  iriver details are here.  They'll be on sale July 17.The unit has a higher resolution (768 x 1024 at 213 ppi] vs the Kindle's 600 x 800 pixel resolution at 167 ppi) though I haven't read about the darkness of the font (the Nook Touch has less-dark fonts than the Kindle or even than the first Nook), but that display sounds good, and it's said to have faster page turns. However,...

June 23, 2011 | 9:44 am

A KINDLE CALENDAR WITH RECURRING EVENTSFor now, Amazon Kindle apps like this are U.S. only, still, although they have said on the forums that they intend them to be international at some point.7 Dragons has done it again.  There are several Kindle calendar apps now but no other with Recurring Events (apparently quite difficult to do) or some of the other features included. From the product description: (All emphases mine)"Calendar is a user friendly scheduling tool and daily planner for Kindle.Calendar lets you see events and to-do lists quickly and easily with day, month and week views.  It lets you create...

Kindle news: latest Amazon tablet rumors – by August or September
June 22, 2011 | 9:57 am

It'll be fun, once Amazon tablets appear, to see which reporters had the best sources. On June 19, I noted TechnoBuffalo's Noah Kravitz writing about his own sources giving him information that conflicted with the previous strong rumors of "Hollywood" and "Coyote" code-named models that would be based, earlier reports had said, on NVIDIA processors. Not so, says Kravitz. ' My sources tell me Amazon’s tablet computer will run Android but feature Intel-based innards, and not an Nvidia Tegra processor, but what beats at the heart of Jeff Bezos’ secret creation is barely half the story...
