Courtesy of Betsy the Quilter on the KBoards, I noticed a new Amazon offer to drive Kindle readership. This time, it’s an old-for-new trade-in – on virtually every model except the Kindle Oasis, alas. Still, as you can read above, your old Kindle might be worth up to $45 off the price of a new one, so it’s certainly worth looking into.
Although Amazon describes this as a “limited-time offer,” they also note that “qualifying trade-ins must be completed on Amazon.com by 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) December 31, 2016,” so obviously there won’t be massive pressure to finish this before the end of the year. The offer page also states that “even non-working devices are eligible” – which is a relief to me, since my 4th-generation Kindle is sitting at home with a battery life that can now be measured in seconds, and defunct WiFi. Most vintages of Kindle, as far back as 1st-generation devices, appear to be eligible. Once the devices are shipped to Amazon (for free) and accepted, “an Amazon Gift Card plus a $20 bonus for a new Kindle will be automatically applied to your account.”
According to the terms, “once your Kindle trade-in is accepted, you can place a Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage, or Kindle for Kids Bundle in your cart and the bonus $20 savings will be automatically applied at checkout.” However, “only one bonus $20 savings credit can be applied per purchase,” and “the bonus $20 savings can be used only toward the purchase of qualifying Kindle e-readers,” with up to five per customer and account, but I doubt many will find those terms too onerous.
As I already remarked, quoting MarketWatch, Kindle users are proven loyal repeat buyers. Amazon is rewarding their loyalty with this deal, and easing their way towards device renewal. Such a pity it doesn’t apply to the Kindle Oasis too. But I’d go for it all the same …

It actually isn’t for all Kindles. The 300 ppi Kindle has never been eligible for trade in and still isn’t, not even under this offer. 🙁
