Oxford English Dictionary will not be printed again
August 29, 2010 | 1:40 pm
From an article in the Telegraph:
A team of 80 lexicographers has been working on the third edition of the OED – known as OED3 – for the past 21 years.
The dictionary’s owner, Oxford University Press (OUP), said the impact of the internet means OED3 will probably appear only in electronic form.
The most recent OED has existed online for more than a decade, where it receives two million hits a month from subscribers who pay an annual fee of £240.
“The print dictionary market is just disappearing, it is falling away by tens of per cent a year,” Nigel Portwood, the chief...
More Kindle 3 reviews and some really techie info on gps/wifi
August 29, 2010 | 12:34 pm
Here are a couple more reviews that are worth your time. I've selected excerpts that deal with the browser.
The first is from The EBook Reader. Among other things the reviewer says:
I opted for the WiFi only model because I couldn't foresee needing to use the 3G all that often—but now I'm regretting that choice because the new WebKit browser actually works better than I'd expected, at least with WiFi. It's not blazing fast and is somewhat limited but is useful for checking email, getting news updates, downloading free ebooks from Feedbooks, Project Gutenberg, Baen, etc., and the article...
Measurements of ereader contrast by Amazon Kindle Blog
August 28, 2010 | 5:37 pm
The unofficial Amazon Kindle Blog has a review of the Kindle 3 and as part of it the author measured the contrast of the Kindle 3, Kindle 2, Nook and Sony PRS-600. Go over to the blog to find out how he did this.
Here are his results:
He also has some measurements of the current draw of the new Amazon booklight/case and so can predict its Kindle battery life impact....

ADMIN: Spam rampant
August 27, 2010 | 2:30 pm
Just a reminder that we’ve got a spamtrap in effect because we receive literally hundreds of spam comments per day. They range from the generic (umpteen zillion ways to say, “Your blog is awesome! I totally agree with everything you have to say. You are such a good writer to know how to make your points so clearly!”) to the strange (the person who claimed to be held prisoner by the Irish mafia who were making him post spam for a Christmas website) to just plain garbage. Sometimes our spamtrap has been known to get a little overzealous...
LG to mass-produce flexible e-paper screens
August 27, 2010 | 1:15 pm
Gizmodo’s Kat Hannaford has a piece indicating that LG is planning begin “mass producing” flexible e-paper screens in both 9.7” color and 19” monochrome sizes. While the prospect of color e-ink continues to be enticing (especially if they can solve the refresh rate problem to let it show video), Hannaford admits to being fascinated by the larger-sized monochrome screen. Weighing in at 130g and measuring 0.3mm thick, it could provide a basis for the newspaper-sized e-newspaper reader that Plastic Logic’s Que turned out not to be. Of course, price and battery life are going to be...
Of Amplified Authors and Unilibraries
August 27, 2010 | 12:15 pm
The Bookseller’s FuturEBook blog has an interesting look by Chris Meade at how today’s authors have more power to promote themselves and build relationships with fans than ever before, leading to a new viability for self-publishing. The Amplified Author of 2010 (term coined for authors engaged in the social web) can sit at her desk and speak directly to her readership through a blog, can expand that circle of readers gradually by using Twitter and other social networks, can find an active readership interested in offering criticism and ideas, can publish work through print...
What ebook is in that Kindle ad? Who is singing the song in the ad?
August 27, 2010 | 12:10 pm
Me and My Kindle has a great post today about this important topic.
She’s reading an ebook on her Kindle, and then the camera pans back to reveal she’s reading it at the beach. (“Silver moons and paper chains,” the background music sings. “Faded maps and shiny things…)” The camera pulls back before you can read the whole page, as though Amazon’s trying to tease you. But one day, I decided I finally had to find out: exactly what ebook is that?
If you want to find out what the book is, then go over and take a look. David Cassel...
Quick Note: Liza Daly reviews Apple Pages with ePub export
August 27, 2010 | 11:46 am
Of course Threepress consulting is one of the major sources to go to for Epub technical stuff. That's why Liza's review is important. There's a lot of detail I don't begin to understand, but here's the bottom line:
Overall I’m quite excited that there’s finally a commercial tool for normal humans that produces one-step valid ePub output. If the XHTML output is improved only to use I’ll be able to recommend Pages without reservation.
However, a more recent tweet of hers says:
