Rich, that's a respectable position -- suck it and see was the deal! It'll be interesting to see what happens when News Corporation put up those paywalls in the spring (if they're still planning that).

Rob, I don't suppose my experience is definitive, but maybe it will give food for thought to anyone else thinking of doing something similar.

I'm always interested to hear about readers who contribute more than the suggested amount. I wonder what they're thinking as they do it. I like to imagine they're positioning themselves as a sort of later-day patron of the arts.

While I'm tempted to suggest taking out these weird statistical outliers, I've come to recognize that they're really the contributions that count. I wonder, though, whether they'll be sustainable with the increasing glut of 'stuff' being 'published.'

Anyway, an intriguing experiment. Thank you for sharing your results with us.

Richard, I confess to having downloaded and not paid for 2 of your books. My reason, however, is that I tried to read them but found them not to my liking and so never got further than a chapter a two. My taste generally is nonfiction, which accounts for my lack of interest.

However, I agree with your overall points. There is an expectation of free as the correct "price" -- the Internet has made it so. Additionally, younger readers are becoming scarcer. Colleges want to see extracurricular activities on applications and reading doesn't count as one. And less value is placed on quality authorship. It's a shame what the confluence of events portends for the future of books and reading.
