Not to mention unbuyable outside the USA. Certainly doesn't take very long to count the Tor books bought in the last few years. A rabbit might be able to manage it. Even Bigwig. :)

An email I have from him last year says he's the producer for Tor.com and also charged with eBooks on Tor.com and involved in the larger eBook strategy for Macmillan.

This interview makes it sound like he's got nothing to do with ebooks from the publisher, Macmillian's (Tor's) perspective.

Sounds like the Tor.com ebook store is going to just be yet another ebook retailer, like Fictionwise or Books On Board. Don't know that we need yet another one, but whatever.

Hopefully Macmillam/Tor (also St. Martin's, etc) will do better with ebooks in the future. Their habit of releasing ebooks at $15 (Wheel of Time among them) when the books have been out in Mass Market for years at $7-$9 is getting tiresome (especially with the errors a lot of them have).

Great interview. Defendini is gracious, thoughtful and balanced -- just as he is at Tor.com. Pity we still can't get answers about Tor ebooks. I wonder if he might be able to connect you with someone at Tor Books who could give you answers. They publish a lot of really fine writers, and it's too bad the work of those writers is locked away from our Readers and Kindles.
