Ars Technica on what ereaders to watch in 2010
December 29, 2009 | 9:19 am

plastic-que1.jpgArs has a short article about what is coming up that is watch-worthy. Jon Stokes discusses the Plastic Logic Que, the Hearst/Sprint Skiff and the Qualcomm Mirasol displays. Of the three, David and I saw a prototype of the QUE at last year's O'Reilly TOC and it was a pretty impressive device. Too big for me, but it is aimed at a different audience - business documents. A smaller one aimed at the general reader would be a "must buy" in my opinion. The current crop of ereaders are really pretty delicate and Plastic Logic seems to...

My Kindle reading light
December 29, 2009 | 9:00 am

imageI use a clamp-on model from Home Depot, with a bright, power-saving bulb. What’s it attached to?  A tall plastic laundry bin containing p-books I want to get to someday: the kind-of equivalent of a 4G memory card (hyperbole alert). The $13 Satin Chrome 1-Light Clamp Bulb can accommodate a 60-watter that’s equivalent to several hundred watts from an ordinary bulb. So the clerk told me. Check to be safe. Luckily lights aren’t like proprietary DRMed e-book formats, and the same one works with my Sony reader and Cybook loaner as well as my K2. Related:...

Screen quality of Sony Reader Daily Edition isn’t quite up to snuff, says Smart Bitches
December 29, 2009 | 8:55 am

PRS900BC.pngSB Sarah went to the SonyStyle store and looked at the Sony Daily Edition and other models. She dislikes the screen quality: So, my review in a nutshell: that touch screen is still not my friend. My biggest problem with the 700 and the Sony Touch is that the coating on the touch screen, while it is sexy to use, degrades the quality of the text such that I need better light in order to read on it. I was reading on the Sony Touch over the weekend (review to come) and found myself tilting the...

‘iSlate’ said to be dedicated e-book reader: More eBabel on the way? Today’s Apple-ology
December 29, 2009 | 6:21 am

image An e-reader, competing directly against the Kindle and Nook, rather than just a multiuse tablet---could this be the mysterious Apple gizmo called the iSlate? That’s the word from QuickPwn, with a friendly pickup in VentureBeat, although there isn’t independent confirmation. Details: “The iSlate will be a competitor to the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook and other e-readers that are out there. Our sources have also told us that the iSlate eBook reader will run on Apple’s upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 software and will include a separate App Store for eBooks.  Apple will be announcing the iSlate...

December 29, 2009 | 6:18 am

image LCDs might be easier to read in the sun and have a better viewing angle---or at least some from LG displays will LG is picking up fringe-field switching technology---the source of such miracles---from the Hydis unit of E Ink maker PVI. See Softpedia and Wall Street Journal. Will do you think, gang? Will this make a big difference? And how does this technology stack up against the tech from PixelQi, which lets LCDs operating in both glowing and reflective modes? Teaser at the end of the Softpedia item: “LG hasn't clearly stated whether it will ever start...

jetBook-Lite upgrade info…
December 29, 2009 | 5:09 am

imageSF writer Robert J. Sawyer, who reviewed the $150 Fictionwise flavor of the jetBook-Lite, disliked found some problems with pesky requests for credit card numbers when he re-opened DRMed eReader e-books. But according to Robert, the screen is good even if it isn’t quite in E Ink’s class. So what about buying the $150 device and hoping for relief later on in the form of an upgrrade with Adobe-DRMed ePub, so you can read best sellers in that format without the same hassles? Well, the jetBook people are at least promising an upgrade. Also, perhaps the eReader DRM...

Faster display or better contrast? New Chinese e-reader favors speed and offers bilingual text-to-speech
December 29, 2009 | 2:52 am

imageA new Chinese e-reader is said to offer less contrast than E Ink, but its six-inch screen is supposedly as thrifty with power and refreshes as quickly. The LCD tech involved is grayscale DSTN. The Insdream SX601 comes with MP3 capability and with FBReader, which means you can read ePub, HTML, nonDRMed Mobi and other common formats. Click on images for more detail. Text to speech is “in both Mandarin Chinese and English.” And how’s this for Chinese-marketese? “Be made of senior materials that come from the eminent factory which is mainly demonstrated in central processing unit, we...

Kindle Nation Daily still on the web – had hosting problems
December 28, 2009 | 8:19 pm

6.jpgWe've had our own hosting problems now and then, so it was with sympathy that I received the following email from Stephen Windwalker about the Kindle Nation Daily. Dear Kindle Nation Subscriber, I've just returned from a delightful mini-vacation to get back to work on this week's free Kindle Nation email newsletter, but I wanted to take a moment first to answer a question you may have had about web access to Kindle Nation Daily posts the past few days. You Can Still Find Kindle Nation Daily on the Web Somehow, during the course of what was otherwise a truly wonderful week, Google's...

A reading lamp for my recliner
December 28, 2009 | 4:42 pm

0085595_PE213372_S3.JPGI've been looking for a reading lamp to use with my Kindle/recliner combination. The Kindle's (or any other) e-ink screen needs fairly good illumination. Well, I went to Ikea the other day and this thing jumped out at me. It's called the NOT and is an floor uplight/reading lamp. The top bowl projects light upwards and the reading lamp is on a gooseneck that can be moved around. The lights are on separate switches. The base is weighted metal, the tube metal and the two shades are plastic. The combination makes for the best reading lamp...

Could Google and Chinese copyright society be about to settle differences?
December 28, 2009 | 12:37 pm
