7 reasons not to give an ebook reader now
November 27, 2009 | 10:34 am

gift.jpegMike Elgan, of Computerworld, has an excellent article on why it is not a good idea to buy an ereader at the current time. I think some of his points make a lot of sense and we all have to realize that anyone buying an ereader is an early adopter and should expect their reader to become obsolete in a matter of months. Here are Mike's reasons: We're on the brink of radical change in how people read ebooks Ebook readers are the least discounted gadgets on the market There are so many other ways to read ebooks Giving an ebook reader may involve...

Black Friday deals on paper books
November 27, 2009 | 10:01 am

51keCCUz1YL._SL110_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-sm,TopRight,8,-14_OU01_.jpgComics and atlases are not displayed to their full advantage in the current crop of ereaders, so I feel no guilt about mentioning these two deals at Amazon. The Complete Far Side 1980-1994, by Gary Larson, and the Complete Calvin and Hobbs, by Bill Watterson, are both available at Amazon for only $79.50 each. Normally each set costs $150. I have the Far Side set and its beautifully bound and printed and comes in a slipcase, as does the Calvin and Hobbes set. I have the complete Calvin and Hobbes in the originals or I would be ordering...

How does Qualcomm’s Mirasol display work?
November 27, 2009 | 9:13 am

images.jpegBlog Kindle discusses this in a recent post. Here's what BK says: Mirasol has been developed by mimicking a feature that makes the butterfly’s wings shimmer. It uses no back lighting, just like e-Ink and uses incidental light to reflect it back through a special layer. This layer is made up of multiple microscopic membranes that can be change through electric current. Once they change, they remain static in that state until another electric charge causes them to change again. This means they do not use electricity during a period of no change. Their main advantage is that these membranes can...

Lawyer predicts another round of negotiations for Google Settlement Agreement
November 27, 2009 | 8:50 am

bite.jpegLitigation Daily, a lawyer's publication, interviewed Gary Redback, one of the lawyers for the Open Book Alliance about the second round of the settlement. According to him we are probably going to see another round of talks because the revised agreement doesn't take into account the concerns of the Department of Justice. Here are a few snippets from Redback's comments: Most neutral commentators were disappointed. They had the opportunity to satisfy issues raised by the DOJ but satisfied very few of them. The biggest issues--how the class action mechanism works, that the settlement would give Google the right to...

Android e-reader coming from Netronix and Texas Instruments
November 27, 2009 | 6:31 am

imageSuppose your Android e-reader could talk to your cellphone? Just what would the two have to say? Damn if I know. But a reader developed by Netronix and Texas Instruments is supposed to interoperate with Android phones in one way or another. Use the handsets to download books? Maybe, I’m guessing. Goal is to ship more than a million units next year. "Additionally,” reports Digitimes, based on a chat with Netronix chairman Arthur Lu, “Netronix plans to incorporate 3G or 3.5G modules into e-book readers, transforming the digital reading devices also into personal communications devices” appearing next year....

Whew! New font hack works with just-released software upgrade for Kindle 2, 2i and DX
November 26, 2009 | 9:41 pm

image The old Kindle font hacks no longer work with the new software upgrade. But already a new font hack can make the letters more readable on the Kindle 2, 2i and DX. See the hack in the screenshot to the left. More hacks on the way? “It's like the Georgia hack,” says edge 777, a commenter on MobileRead, discussing the just-released hack, “but the font is a bit narrower, darker and larger, and Bold doesn't pop as much… “I personally prefer the other one, but personal tastes are great (which is why Amazon should really allow...

Amazon offers Kindle 2 for $159 with Audible membership
November 26, 2009 | 8:29 pm

imageAmazon is offering a $100 discount on Audible-ready devices for members of its $14.95/month Audible audiobook club, including the Kindle 2. This would reduce the price of the Kindle 2 to $159. While I make no bones that the Kindle 2 is not the perfect e-book reader, and Amazon is still doing some things that really annoy me, that price would make the Kindle 2 a lot more tempting if I had that much money to spare. Of course, given that the Kindle 2 was sold out the last time I checked, it is anybody’s guess when the...

My e-book Thanksgiving list
November 26, 2009 | 3:28 pm

thanksgiving Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! A number of other sites are doing Thanksgiving lists (Ars Technica, Wired, another Wired, and Wired again on things not to be thankful for), and I thought I would assay one of my own. Of course, we all know that we have a lot more to be thankful for than just e-book-related things, but they are this site’s focus after all. There are a lot of people and companies that have made a difference in the e-book industry this year, and I thank the ones important to me below. These are the folks...

November 26, 2009 | 3:20 pm

The Pixel Qi screen, which offers both an e-book mode and the capabilities of a color LCD, is scheduled to go into production next month. Will Pixel Qi scale up without a hitch? Stay tuned. Cllick on videos---away from the arrows---for better views. Same for the photo to the left below. Now, in Pixel Qi’s words, here’s the really interesting news for the masses: “We have begun design of a sub-10 watt HDTV that can be used in hundreds of millions of households that don't have steady, if any, access to electrical...
