Kindle DX/Boston Globe deal—and super-econo e-reading gizmos for the cash-strapped

By David Rothman

image For the upscale market: You can buy a Kindle DX, a leather cover and a full year of the Boston Globe for $499, or a mere $10 above the usual $489. The deal is apparently not limited to the Boston area, says Steve Windwalker’s Kindle Nation blog.

For the cash-strapped: eBay is, as always, a good place to start, at least for the wary. A 32MB Compaq PDA in working condition is going for as little as $45 with free U.S. shipping, from a seller with 99.8 percent positive feedback. The Mobipocket reader should work fine with the Compaq (can’t say for sure without trying it). Also consider eBookwise cheapies, starting at $90.

And speaking of deals, have you any holiday bargains to report?
