Great review for a great book. I have read both Fledgling and Saltation while they were being serialized and am really happy Baen picked them up. BTW, not only there will be Ghost Ship, but also Mouse and Dragon - a sequel to Scout's Progress!

P.S. Another Baen writer, Dave Freer, is doing the same thing with his book Save the Dragons. It's a pretty fun fantasy comedy so far.

I was originally directed to them by Alexandria Digital Literature (Alexlit), myself, back when I was first trying it. They were some of the first books to convince me that Alexlit really knew what it was talking about. Hodgell's God Stalk was another. :)

I actually bought the Embiid e-books (of the main series, at least) and then shelled out all over again for the Baen ones. (The omnibuses and unibuses anyway.)

The Webscription months with Fledgling and Saltation are on my Amazon Wish List now. Maybe I'll get them for Christmas. :)

I see that several of Meisha Merlin's authors have continued with Baen (my favorites being the Lee & Miller, and P.C. Hodgell); Meisha Merlin's brief run on Webscriptions seems to have helped some good authors connect with new readers, to the benefit of all. Good for them!

The Liaden series was unknown to me prior to their introduction on Webscriptions, but I have enjoyed them very much.

It is interesting to note that, in the relatively small ebook marketplace that is Webscriptions, these books had a much easier time gaining attention than they would've had in a big, crowded store. They were prominently featured, as I recall, when Meisha Merlin first debuted on Webscriptions.

No doubt they would've benefited even more from prime placement in physical bookstores - if such a small publisher could've gotten it. But this looks like a good example of authors (and publishers) taking advantage of alternate avenues to reach a wider audience.
