A bit of warning; heed the cautions on the web site: the newer OI releases format the reader's onboard storage. It is for good and valid performance reasons but make sure you backup your onboard storage before trying even the Live version.
I gave up on the official firmware on my BeBook and I'm sticking with the May OpenInkpot snapshot. Stable, fast, and flexible. The few issues I've run into are clearly due to the book, not the software.
Worth a look if your hardware is supported.

The 0.2-rc2 release is broken. Use rc3 instead:

http://openinkpot.org/pub/releases/0.2/rc3/

I have been using rc1 for a week and I'm really liking it.

If you just want to try OpenInkPot out, the live version is availabel again. It does not remove your existing firmware but instead gives you the option of booting into OpenInkPot at any time.

Ukrainian vendor Azbooka actually uses OpenInkpot as the official firmware on their Wisereader 516 ebook reader. It is based on the Hanvon 516 platform.
Mobileread's hardware matrix has grown quite large of late; there's a lot of vendors playing the game, with more coming:
