The Nokia N810 solves some of your problems, but not the text-to-speech one. I don't believe that many schools are shoving Kindles down kid's throats -- More are shoving itunes and ipods down their throats, and children only have so much room in their throats :)

I don't think epaper is that essential; I've read many books without it. Maybe the right netbook will help. There is a huge variety of stuff on the way that will allow almost anyone to find a device that suffices.

Kindle is not for everyone as no device is so. That's why schools shouldn't make "Kindle in every backpack" policy. My daughter's high school had a discussion during an English Class and majority was against it.

However, it's a great device for me. I can't read high contrast e-book readers more than 1 hour because I get a bad headache. E-ink is great for my eyes. I never get headache reading Kindle. Also I can make the fonts bigger, which is very helpful for my aging eyes.

As I mentioned before, there's no device which pleases everyone. It's just impossible.

Thanks for the comments all, but there have been some incidences where schools will shove the kindle down kid’s throats, and it is not right. Kids should have a right to pick and choose. Not be forced into using something that they don’t want to use, or either can't use, hence why I did the review… plus I just wanted to tell about how bad my experience was using my friends kindle.

> Different strokes for different folks.

Exactly, Al. That is the problem with the "Kindle in every backpack" philosophy. Enjoy your K machine! Robert is just concerned that educators will take the slogan too literally.

Thanks,
David

I am sure there are lots of people for whom the Kindle is not a suitable device. Some of those people also cannot use paper books. For me, the Kindle is amazing, but then I can read at the second to largest font, can have it read my computer documents to me if I wish and I have it with me all the time. I recently returned a book to the library that had print too small for me and bought the Kindle version, so I will keep mine, thank you very much. Different strokes for different folks. All these e-readers have tradeoffs in various areas. High contrast and bright backlight equates to short battery life while e-ink, though it has no internal light, equates to a long battery life, days instead of hours. That is my choice, your mileage may vary.
