Some other publishers are apparently doing e-books, e-chapters, *AND* rental books. I saw a thing about CengageBrain.com and it sounds like they have a lot of great options if you want to use one of their books.

I agree that this method of using an e-textbook is obnoxious to say the least. If you payed for it you should be able to download it and keep it. That is one of the things I actually always like about physical textbooks- the tangibility. I didn't keep all of my textbooks from college but I did keep the ones I really liked. I know thats a nerdy thing to do ;) But it can be so costly to have to buy all these textbooks so I always used http://www.bigwords.com to find them. They are a textbook search engine. I do look forward to seeing how this textbook rental thing that everyone keeps talking about pans out. It would be something I would consider if I were to go back for my masters, but I wouldn't ever use these silly e-books.

If you can print it, it's yours.

Helpfully,

This sounds like Pearson is trying very hard to discredit the e-book in the education system. They can say, "See, nobody wants e-books in our courses!" and go back to their expensive paper books. Of course what they don't realize is that pirates will fill that void in a heartbeat when they recognize that Pearson is deliberately torpedoing the e-book effort. They will feel righteously justified in their actions. Why not, one bad deed deserves another!
