I could see this in a bookstore or library. There would be hard copies of books for browsing, and then when you find a book you wanted to purchase or borrow, you go to the kiosk, run through your credit card (or pay at the cashwrap and get a voucher with a code to punch in) and plug in your reader to download it. Let's get Barnes & Noble together with Fictionwise on that one. Oh, wait. :-)

Since such a kiosk is controlled by a retail store, I would think downloading would be safe. A freestanding kiosk in a truck stop, maybe not so much. ;-)

It is just me, or would any one else hesitate before loading public files from a public machine on to my private MP3 player. I'm not saying there is malware or spyware in kiosk, or even that it is possible have such a thing on an iPod, but the lure of free music just isn't enough to tempt me.

As a general rule, you should load files from anywhere to anything unless you're pretty sure of the source. Of course, even companies like Sony can try to pull stunts and load rootkits, so you can never be totally sure, but nevertheless a malt liquor kiosk would set off my internal klaxon.
