First of all, it also lets you play video and surf the web. Secondly, the screen is far larger. If battery life on a long trip is a big concern, get an Energi to go for 18,000 mah of power which is 12 times what the JE100 features, the battery is the size of a skinny paperback book. Woot recently had this battery for $100. I think 39-78 hours (including the native 3-6 hours) of reading, web-surfing, video watching and color photo viewing should suffice for most people.

Lemme see here ... hm-m: the JoinTech J-Pro 7100 has an 800x480 color 7" LCD touch screen, running WinCE and costs $99. Subtract the keyboard, use the same screen and OS, and it looks to me like you've got an 8-ounce e-book reader, which also plays music and video files, for an even lower price.

Cat, it’s the size. You’re talking about 3-4 times the screen size of an iTouch or your average PDA. Almost magazine-page size… and in color, yet. That, I think, is its greatest feature.

I guess I don’t understand how this improves on an iPod Touch with the appropriate apps.

And how can anybody call a battery life of 3 to 6 hours “long”?

The painfully low battery life is the deal-breaker for me. 3-6 hours wouldn’t last most people a trip to the airport, flying time, etc.

As Dana pointed out, it’d be nice to see at least a week’s worth of reading before needing a charge. Constantly worrying about the battery dying definitely takes away from a positive ebook reading experience.

Given the first readers on the market got over 20 hours of battery life, albeit, non-color, how can they think this is acceptable battery life? At the very least I would like a reader to have battery life for at least a weekend’s worth of reading without worrying about needing a charge.

On the other hand I am happy to see someone still exploring LCD in readers.

I wouldn’t consider it useless, for two reasons: One, many people read less than 3-6 hours per day (me, for instance), so this device would work fine for them; and Two, if it has a rechargeable battery, you may be able to recharge it on-the-fly with peripherals like battery- or solar-based chargers.

Bottom line, I would definitely check this out, and if it didn’t cost too much, I’d bring one home based on the specs I’ve seen.
