Pixel Qi screens will turn netbooks into e-readers
May 29, 2009 | 9:09 am
PC World has a report on the screens from Pixel Qi, the company founded by former OLPC CTO Mary Lou Jepsen. (See pictures of the screens in this TeleRead story.) The article promises that Pixel Qi’s new three-mode, low-power-consumption displays will be in netbooks by the end of the year, magically turning them into e-book readers fit to compete with Kindle, Sony, and others. "What you're looking at is a screen that's entirely reflective," said [John Ryan, chief operating officer at Pixel Qi], at Pixel Qi's temporary office in Taipei. "It's just running like e-paper...
COOL-ER ereader at the show
May 29, 2009 | 9:06 am
Stopped by their booth, which is certainly innovative, to take a look at the reader. It is a nice unit. Very light and feels good in the hand. The tell me that EPUB is what they are betting on for the future. It is available in 8 colors, which is sort of fun, and will retail for $249. They are now going into full production and units should be available in the first week of June. Users can share books purchased from the Coolerbooks website with up to five other readers. Here are a few shots: ...
Five-year-olds take on my Sony Reader
May 29, 2009 | 5:26 am
Related: Chris Meadows’ May 29 installment in his series evaluating the Sony PRS-700. – D.R. I supervise an informal after-school program a few times a week, and had my Sony Reader PRS-505 out while the kids were at play. My gadgets are a familiar sight to them---I use a netbook and iPod, among other things, in some of my actual teaching lessons---and the older children are fond of playing trivia games with me on the iPod from time to time. The other day, they were busy with their lego building and I thought I could finish off...
Two weeks with a Sony PRS-700: Ergonomic factors
May 29, 2009 | 5:14 am
In this entry, I’m taking a closer look at what the device is like: what are its ergonomic factors, and how is the display? (As usual, click on any picture to see it full-size.) Ergonomics We’ll start with an ergonomic overview. The screen itself is about the size of a paperback book page, with a resolution of 800 vertical by 600 horizontal—167 pixels per inch, just slightly more than the iPhone’s 160 ppi density, or twice-and-change an ordinary monitor’s 72 pixels per inch. It’s not quite enough dots per inch to look just like a real printed sheet...

May 28, 2009 | 2:36 pm
TeleRead Co-Editor Paul Biba, while covering BookExpo America, landed a nice scoop---the news that a BE Book with E Ink will retail for a mere $199 or so.
And for around $30, you’ll be able to buy a wireless add-on. Kindle-level ease ahead for other e-book-shoppers?
Scroll down for these and other BEA posts from Paul.

Two weeks with a Sony PRS-700: Getting started
May 28, 2009 | 2:11 pm
I have just spent a day trying various different types of e-books with the PRS-700 that Sony has loaned me for the next two weeks. By and large, it has been an interesting experience, and I’m starting to see a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of e-ink. It’s been interesting.
In this post, I will cover the installation process, and take a brief look at two conduits—the included Library and the open-source Calibre. Future posts will include some photographic comparisons between the 700 and other readers I have been using.
Quick Start
I guess that someone at Sony had the...
BookExpo America: Odds and ends
May 28, 2009 | 1:57 pm
Here's a shot of them setting up the Expo floor, taken from the Press Room. At a general press conference about the show we were told Attendance is down 14% from 2007 in New York, but up 36% from 2008 in LA. Exhibitor registration is down 10-15% from last year and square footage is down 21% Michael Smith of the IDPF organized a panel about marketing ebooks that played to standing room only. The place was packed and, by a show of hands, they were almost all...
$199 E Ink machine from BE Book—with optional $30 wireless card on the way
May 28, 2009 | 1:40 pm
One of the things I learned at CES was that the best time to really poke around a show is the day before when they are setting up. Of course this isn't always easy, as press usually isn't allowed in during this time. However, once you get in you generally don't get thrown out. So the trick is getting in. Suffice it to say I found a way to get into the show floor here, and was lucky enough to run into Peter Zieleman, Marketing Manager, and Johan Hagenbeuk, CEO, of BE Book. They were just setting up their...

May 28, 2009 | 12:21 pm
Did top news executives violate anti-trust laws when they secretly met in Illinois to discuss “Models to Monetize Content”?
You’ll wonder after you read an Atlantic post by Jim Warren, a former Chicago Trib executive....
The impact of piracy and “free” on book sales
May 28, 2009 | 11:04 am
Finally found an open ethernet port!
The show floor is not open today, that starts tomorrow, but there are a series of lectures, panels and presentations going on all day. I'm attending a few and will report on what I've heard.
This lecture is an update on the O'Reilly piracy project, presented by Brian O'Leary of Magellan Media who was hired by O'Relly to undertake the study.
They want to quantify the impact of piracy on book sales. Random House joined the study. The project is still continuing. Looking for more publishers to get a bigger database....
