It would be $6 per $9 e-book. Henry Melton, who sells his e-books for $5, keeps about $1.70 from each Kindle sale.

(He also gets about $1.75 from his App Store appbook sales at $5, but that's because he has to split the 2/3 that Apple doesn't take with the coder who creates the app framework.)

Does Amazon really keep 2/3s of the money?

65%

I see it as marketing and visibility and, thus, as an expense. NOT revenue.

Does Amazon really keep 2/3s of the money? THat would be about ~$6 per eBook. How does this compare to their physically book sales.

I use Mobipocket on my phone, but was considering getting a Kindle.

Generally, a reason why people might prefer to sell their books elsewhere is a dislike of the terms of the Kindle store—Amazon keeps 2/3 of the money for itself. So instead they sell elsewhere in Kindle-compatible DRM-free Mobipocket format.

What Alan said. I actually removed my novels from the Kindle store, due to pathetically low sales, and an even lower profit after Amazon took their cut. It just wasn't worth the trouble. My feeling is that indies are better off spending their time and money on advertising and promotion, and staying clear of the Kindle store.

Any DRM-free MOBI is readable on the Kindle. So publishers who avoid DRM (in this case Samhain Publishing), don't have to sell via the Kindle Store. Most still do so, because otherwise Kindle owners are unlikely to find the ebook.
