Hi, Cat. Good hearing from you, and thanks for the MobileRead pointer.

Yep, I'm happy that The Solomon Scandals is available on Amazon in nonDRMed form.

There is a DRMed version, but luckily it's easy to tell the two versions apart. See Allan W's comment at http://www.teleread.com/2009/03/25/npr-offers-clueful-drm-story-rude-surprises-ahead-for-unsuspecting-kindle-owners/#comment-1026736

Thanks,

Sorry about the off-topic post, but wanted to reach David.

We were discussing DRM-free books available from Amazon over at mobileread and one of the commenters noted that your book _The Solomon Scandals_ is in fact DRM free. I vaguely recalled seeing a post by you in which you were wondering whether it would have DRM on it when it came out at Amazon, and wanted to let you know that, no, apparently it doesn't. Whatever you did to get it DRM-free worked. Congratulations!

(at mobileread I'm Catsittingstill; the thread in question is here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43387#post410487

One of the many questions Bezos needs to address is book "licenses." Customer Service has been telling people that a Kindle book purchased from Amazon has only 6 licenses and once used, none of these can be deactivated. In other words, if you sell a Kindle and wipe all the books off of it, any books which were ever on it are STILL using up one license. Considering that people are now reading some books on their iPhones and iPod Touches, we are using up these licenses faster than if they only applied to a Kindle device. Currently I have 3 Kindles and 1 Touch on my account. If one of those Kindles breaks, then I have lost one license for my books, even if that device is deregistered. It does not seem in Amazon's interest to adhere to this policy when a device is deregistered, but according to what they tell us in customer service, that is the case. There is no incentive to upgrade to a new device when that may send your account over the limit of 6.

Thanks, Pond. The reason for my suggesting TeleRead is that so many people here are YEARS ahead of the typical e-book fan. If Jeff Bezos were to address these issues simply through an Amazon blog, the years-ahead people would be lost in the crowd.

Just the same, I'm not suggesting that Bezos needs to blog here constantly (though he's very welcome to). Rather he should drop by to get feedback just as the Microsoft hardware designer did.

As for the idea of Jeff Bezos having his own blog at Amazon, that's terrific. He really should.

Thanks, Pond!

I think it's a great idea. But there's no reason why he should venture over here; Amazon already has a blog from its people; Mr Bezos should blog to that, or set up a personal blog there, the way Tim O'Reilly does. Then we could comment on what he says.
