Yes, there is a free Kindle app for the iPhone. It's a little rough, and does not support all of the major features of the Kindle yet—it's mainly meant for Kindle owners to read their books in situations where they can't carry their Kindle—but they've been improving it version by version.

I am looking into getting one of these and I am getting so many mixed reviews... It does make the purchase a difficult one but it seems as though it might be a bit more time consuming than I had planned. my question is, is there an app for the iPhone and if so how does it compare to the Kindle? I havent gotten to see these in actions yet so I am unsure of the Kindle's capabilities. I would really like to read from those users who are deeply engaged in this device but can break it down to me as simply as possible.

Alas, the prices of the Kindle are not set by demand, but by supply. The eInk displays are the worst cost driver, probably followed by the mobile connectivity. If you know the bill of materials of the Kindle, and factor in several M for R&D, the cost of getting it to the customer, taking back faulty devices etc., Amazon's margin approaches Zero. It is sad, but this aint no iPhone yet.

Note that even cheapo Chinese readers, sans beautiful design, usable software and mobile connection, cost upward of 250$!

Amazon is currently still building a market, probably without counting on huge near term profits. You should be prepared to pay early adopter's prices. The 2nd hand prices for the previous Kindle model are just that: 2nd hand prices for obsolete hardware thrown out by 1st generation early adopters.
