‘Nearly 30% Of books sold for the Kindle are now above $9.99′
January 27, 2009 | 11:42 am
So reports The Consumerist. Books about computers and the Net are the biggest offenders, with 80 pecent above $9.99. Granted, all kinds of complexities exist. For example, some tech books bear high prices because the potential readership for them is limited. Still, the upward price creep is another reminder that Amazon needs close watching. Could Amazon's efforts to herd people into the Kindle and Mobipocket formats also result in higher prices---with Amazon enjoying more than its share of the profits?
Oprah as quoted by the Consumerist: ""I know it's expensive in these times, but it's not frivolous because" the Kindle "will...
Yet other good news for e-books: Notebooks making up 71 percent of Apple sales
January 27, 2009 | 5:40 am
E-books are a lot more comfortable to read, cuddle with, whatever, on a portable computer. So they could benefit from an uptick in sales of netbooks, the smaller notebooks.
And here's some brand-specific info on Apple: Notebooks now make up over 70 percent of Mac sales, an item on VentureBeat.
And now the $64,000 Question: When will Amazon/Mobipocket offer a reader for the Mac? Here Jeff D. Rockefeller want to purge PDF from Amazon and drive people to Mobi or maybe even to the Kindle. What a diss for Mac users. Say what you will against PDF---and I say plenty!---but at least...
Has the R Word crimped YOUR e-booking? And is the global recession a reason for the new $280 BeBook price?
January 27, 2009 | 3:03 am
Home Depot. Caterpillar. Sprint. Nextel. Those are among the big companies that, as reported in the New York Times, announced layoffs yesterday.
What does this dismal economy mean for you and your e-book reading? Are you buying fewer books? Settling for less than the ideal e-reader or book-capable cellphone for your needs?
I won't take anything for granted. One small publisher tells me that sales are actually up. Could people be turning to e-books for escape, especially with prices less than for paper books?
We're a global blog, so comment no matter what your location, which perhaps you can provide.
Speaking of affordability...
E-books and the cuddle myth
January 27, 2009 | 2:08 am
"It seems every time there is an article about e-books there has to be a line in it about how you cannot cuddle up with an e-book." - Nonstopbooks, via Bibliofutures, in LISNews. The TeleRead take: Kinda like the bathtub myth, eh? Or the you-can't-take-'em-to-beach myth? Links lead to The Facts. "Personally," Nonstopbooks goes on, "I cringe everytime I read about cuddling an e-book. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against cuddling but I don't think every passionate reader should be labeled a cuddler. For me the closest I come to cuddling is reading on...
Plastic Logic reader: Still lookin’ good for early 2010
January 27, 2009 | 12:15 am
Plastic Logic's big screened Amazon-killer won't be out until early 2010, as noted here earlier.
But in a video a Plastic Logic marketing VP assures us that among other things:
The device will be and competitively priced. So does that mean well under $400? maybe even less than $300? See earlier video for a little hint of pricing in the $300 rnage, as well as a reference to a 2010 release.
Plastic Logic will seek e-books and content from a number of sources---a fact listed among PL's advantages over closed machines such as the Kindle. Hint, hint, Amazon. Jeff Bezos and friends, in...
PW lays off Sara Nelson, its editor in chief
January 26, 2009 | 5:15 pm
Sara Nelson lacked my full passion for e-books, perhaps one reason why I'm no longer blogging for Publishers Weekly, but I still sorry to see any anybody lose a job, especially in this horrid economy. Good luck, Sara. What PW really needs in the Web area: A more interactive approach and much better software for reader interaction. Technorati Tags: Publishers Weekly,Sara Nelson...
Ebook Freebies #1
January 26, 2009 | 5:13 pm
Welcome to the first installment of free ebooks. Every few weeks, TeleRead provides a list of free ebooks which have come to our attention (see also our Guide to Free Ebook Download sites). This regular feature will give an annotated list of the latest ebooks to come to our attention recently. (See also: Teleread's general list of where to find free ebook titles). This installment we will be playing a little game of catch up. Over the last few months Teleread has been blogging about so many free titles that it seems like a waste not to mention them here. ...
Amazon to drop Microsoft and Adobe e-book formats
January 26, 2009 | 12:49 pm
Amazon will no longer be offering e-books in the Microsoft or Adobe formats, according to an article in today's Publishers Weekly.
According to the article Amazon will only offer books in their own Kindle and Mobip ocket formats. There was no time frame specified for the change over.
The Microsoft format, lit, is pretty well dead, as far as I can see, anyway. PDFs on Amazon are mainly technical books. I wonder how technical publishers are going to deal with this, because the Kindle/Mobipocket format is not very well suited to a lot of technical publications....

Downloading books directly to Stanza
January 26, 2009 | 11:49 am
I don't know how I missed this one earlier. I'm talking about my colleague Andrew Savikas and a TOC blog post he made last November about downloading books into the Stanza iPhone reader. Stanza and their ebook offerings aren't exactly big news. It's a fine app and all, but what's really cool is how Andrew and his team have shown how the service can be extended. The blog post gives step-by-step instructions on how anyone can load an O'Reilly EPUB ebook into Stanza. So if you've taken advantage of an O'Reilly ebook bundle you can quickly and easily load...
