There are other options, of course, including:
* A home generator
* Charging at work
* Using the lighter socket to charge
* A battery pack that can charge via USB cable

I’ve got a z22, so reading in the dark is comfortable for me! Unfortunately its battery is non-replaceable. I’ll have to look into picking up something else with a replaceable battery once the device’s li-ion is shot. My Alphasmart Dana uses AA batteries, but so far as I’ve found, it’s not back-lit. I can type in the dark on it, though.

Interesting thought. Maybe I should hang on to my Palm IIIxe for more than just memories myself! Or at least keep my Sony Reader fully charged for such an event… surely it can outlast a power outage.

Then again, if you use a backlit reader, like the eBookWise, you’ll be able to read in the dark. Not so with traditional paper.

(That said, I’m happy to have my AAA-powered Palm IIIxe available for reading).
