Hi, Goldie–excellent questions. I suspect that right now cellphones are NOT having much effect on literacy rates in developing countries. But cellphones screens should improve as e-readers. We’re talking long term–perhaps five or ten years.

Just as importantly, efforts should be made to create books of interest—including those from local writers and publishers in developing countries. Plus, the e-books should blended into the educational systems for use on a variety of devices, the OLPC laptop among them.

For now, the real action in the little world of cellphone books is probably more in developed countries. But I could be wrong. I’d welcome facts and opinions from readers! You’ll recall I ran a post from Africa on cell phone e-reading prospects there.

I enjoyed your post about on the impact of cellphones – how close do you think we are to cellphones actually impacting literacy rates in developing countries? Do you think that cellphone customers in developed countries will get into e-books first or that reading on a cellphones is something that the developing economies may develop a demand for as they have a lack of books (i.e. they have more a need for it, whereas we don’t).
