Joseph, thanks for enlightening us. All the past generations of Dunphys (or whatever you prefer as the plural) will be pleased to hear we've restored your proper name. Mea culpa. Blame me, not Beth. We've also addressed the Mash/Mashable issue.

Even if Mash does get a blogging platform, I would strongly recommend that one avoid using it to establish a new location for one’s 360 blog, because one may well be setting oneself up for the next unpleasant surprise.

Exactly! As I see it, the only real guarantee is to blog under one's own domain. Glad to see you reinforcing the main point of the post.

Thanks,
David

Joseph Dunlap? :)

That is one of the more creative misspellings of my name I've seen. To be exact, I invited Ms.Wellington to Mash, no affiliation with Pete Cashmore's Mashable, where I'm also a member.

Mash isn't going to take care of the lady's difficulties, as the place lacks a blogging platform, but thank you for reminding me, Mr.Rothman. Multiply does have a blogging platform and a blog moving program. One does well to download copies of one's blog pages before using that tool, as there has been at least one report of lost blog entries, but for the most part, the program seems to have run smoothly for the many, many users who switched over. It might take care of a few problems for Ms.Wellington, who has a lot of material to move.

Mash is an aggregator with a new recreational modules added for fun. The need to be invited builds up a mystique around the product that isn't justified. Also, since Yahoo seems to be acting on the "Peanut Butter Manifesto" theory, we do have the problem that Yahoo has somewhat recently purchased Mybloglog, which could itself be called an aggregator, albeit not a very good one. This raises the question of how long Mash will stay in existence, given the actions we've already seen out of Yahoo.

Wow, that Wordpress.Com topic about domain names was pretty much horrifying in its level of complexity and obscurity.

You know, I always read about this or that great web service and for the most part I severely limit which ones I uses precisely because of this ... if someone else has your data, then you have limited control over it.

OTOH, does Yahoo! realize the horrible message its sending? Okay, I could see if they decided this was no longer something they wanted to be in, shutting off new registrations, etc. But this is a service they promoted *heavily* back when it was launched.

The lesson I get from this is that I shouldn't use Mash and I should advise others not to use it because if it doesn't catch on -- like 360 never caught on -- Yahoo! is fine with just abandoning its users.

I wouldn't be surprised if 360 was some startup that launched in 2005 and never quite made it, but this is a rather cavalier attitude for a company like Yahoo!

I'm not looking for my name as a dotcom. I expected that to be taken (if not legit, then illegit to bug me). It's the whole issue of trying to figure out the first step: getting the domain and knitting it to the WP blog. And then what happens later if I want to go my own server? This stuff is not yet easy enough... (I have a name for my new blog that's not taken.)

Controlling your own web address is essential to controlling your own "digital destiny". That is why I obtained the address garsonotoole.com. Unsurprisingly nothing has been done with the address because my digital destiny consists primarily of laziness ;-).

Actually, Mike, this proves my point. Your life would be simpler if you had just started out with a WordPress blog on an independent server. Sorry about the hassles. Mikecane.com is taken, but .net is open. Register it ASAP before another Cane beats you to it. Good luck at this! David

Hoping to do a new blog, I've been wondering about getting a domain name. But every time I read this text at WordPress, my head spins all over again...
