Harlequin’s spicy plans: Erotic short stories—plus e-editions of all books

By David Rothman

HarlequinHarlequin is launchingSpice Briefs, erotic short stories available exclusively in the eBook format.” Intro price for the 5,000-15,000-word stories will be 99 cents until August 15, and the regular price will be $2.99.

Two Briefs will appear a month—in Adobe PDF, Microsoft Reader and Mobipocket, at the least. Let’s hope that the IDPF format joins them soon, or at least after the DRM issue is worked out. Meanwhile let’s hope that eReader won’t be AWOL.

Also, starting this month, all of Harlequin’s 1,300 books a year are to come out in electronic editions. What a great example for other publishers. Hello, HarperCollins? I’m still waiting for an electronic edition of The Yiddish Policeman’s Union. Is Michael Chabon pulling a J.K. on you? The TeleBlog has a squad of literate goons standing by, ready to make persuasive Godfather-style suggestions to recalcitrant writers.

(Thanks for the pointer, Jane. Some info picked up from Publishers Weekly.)

  1. I don’t read romance stories, but I applaud Harlequin for doing this. I hope other’s follow suit.
