‘MIT Wirelessly Powers a Lightbulb’: E-book hardware possibilities?

By David Rothman

Light bulbOne beef about the forthcoming $199 eee laptops from Asus is that battery life may not be long enough, and that might put off some e-bookers. But what if you didn’t need batteries when inside your house or apartment? Suppose the electricity could travel through the air just like WiFi signals? The not-quite-new tech from MIT is a hot topic on Slashdot.

Question: What about the health ramifications? Would you want all this juice floating around in your house?

And speaking of weird technology: Talking paper seeks cheap printing to be viable, in the Washington Post. Hmm. Talking p-books someday?

  1. While I find the technology has a neato factor the 40% efficiency is horrible. Imagine if the energy demands of the US went up 60%….

Cute, but not very effective. my AC Adapter for my old Jornada 540 outputs 7 Watts. For the PDA to get the same wattage from this tech it would be consuming 17.5Watts. Thats almost enough according to some sources to power two LED replacement bulbs capable of providing equivalent lighting to two 75 watt incandescent bulbs.
