[...] Teleread has posted links to presentations given at last week’s IDPF Digital Book 2007 conference. I came fairly close to attending myself, but in the end I talked myself out of it. I appreciate David Rothman posting these links so I can at least glean the information second-hand.
It's great that major players are agreeing on a standard. I read Garth Conboy's presentation (and a few others) and certainly agree with the sentiment that DRM is bad.

Speaking of DRM, this is obviously something that still needs work. A non-DRM infected ebook standard is wonderful, but if it gets wrapped in proprietary DRM, cross-platform useage goes out the window. That situation wouldn't be any better than today's multiple format mess.

I applaude the efforts of everyone involved and look forward to the day when I really can use just one ebook format on numerous devices , with or without DRM (preferably without).

BTW, I am one of those ebook consumers who votes with his wallet. I avoid DRM infected ebooks and music unless absolutely necessary. In fact, I would buy more ebooks than I do if there were no DRM. There are a few enlightened publishers/distributers who provide non-DRM ebooks. I buy from them whenever possible.
