Copyrighter Said, "Why don’t you find a socialist country to join where all the music is given away freely?"

The DMCA has made this country a socialist country. So why move to another socialist country?

If anything, I will find a "free country" if there are any more left in the world!

Plasmacutter, our whole economy is far from "a nearly communist regaime." But, in effect, within the area of high tech, Valenti and crew are certainly doing their parts to effect a command-driven approach. Thanks for your perspective comments. I hope you'll act on them.

Especially I hope you'll spread word about John Edwards and encourage people to ask why he hasn't spoken out against the Entertainment-Copyright Complex.

Drug companies are fair game for him, and during a podcast, if I'm not mistaken, his wife even used the word "bought" to describe certain government activities or legislation that the companies had influenced. But when it comes to copyright law, Edwards is mum, mum, mum despite having been "the People's Senator."

The longer he is silent, the more likely it is that he's Hollywood's Manchurian Candidate for '08.

You and others can email Edwards via his poverty center at the University of North Carolina. While I've been blunt in my commentaries, I would strongly encourage people not to flame Edwards--just to remind him politely that Hollywood-bought copyright law has been a disaster for the tech and telecom industries, which, in revenue, dwarf the entertainment biz.

I'm hardly expecting zillions of e-mails to pour into John Edwards' office, but this is a start. Of the prospective Democratic candidates for '08, he might well be the most likely to speak out against copyright term extension and the DMCA. One reason? To uphold his "populist" rep. Another? He has so much to explain--such as the huge donations from producer Steve Bing early in Edwards' previous presidential campaign.

If we can turn around Edwards, some others in both parties might well follow.

"Why don’t you find a socialist country to join where all the music is given away freely? Then maybe you’ll realize why everyone prefers the evil-empire created music: free-markets create better products."

The DMCA does only one thing: it takes our capitalist society and turns it into a COMMAND ECONOMY (that's right, communism).
By allowing the **AA's to imprison and sue those who merely create the computer equivalent of the screwdriver, our government has given them all the leverage they need to FORCIBLY DICTATE the design of new technologies to tech companies completely unrelated to "their" music and movies.

Another standard characteristic of a free capitalist market is the existence of private individual property. DRM is depriving people of that right by micromanaging THEIR purchased property against their will in their own homes, thus depriving them of said right to personal property. Without the concept of personal ownership, it is arguable that a capitalist system will collapse.

The DMCA has turned our economy into a nearly communist regime with the copyright cartels appointed as the "commanders" of our new command economy.

"Freemarketers create better products."

Exactly my belief as well. In fact, that's why I'm disturbed over the domination of the entertainment industry by RIAA-type groups--which care less about the entertainment biz as a whole than about the welfare of the usual suspects. What's more, if you love competition, maybe you can do something about the outrageous fees that the big boys charge for permissions. Those are just two examples. See Darknet, J.D. Lasica's book, subject of a forthcoming review in the TeleBlog. Thanks for writing. - DR

This post is a prime example of the hysteria that liberals are trying to whip around the issue of IP theft. Your problem isn't with the RIAA, it's with the fact that America is based on the free-market. Why don't you find a socialist country to join where all the music is given away freely? Then maybe you'll realize why everyone prefers the evil-empire created music: free-markets create better products.
Get over it.
